Music by Dvorak, Elgar and Finzi

Concert details

The centrepiece of our Autumn 2015 concert is Dvorak’s 1887 version (organ accompaniment) of the ‘Mass in D’. This is a subtle, lyrical and almost pastoral setting of the Mass, greatly influenced by the composer’s Bohemian heritage and lifelong interest in the Bohemian and Moravian folk traditions. The programme also includes Elgar’s ‘Ave Verum’, ‘O Hearken Thou’ and ‘Ecce Sacerdos’, together with his wonderful setting of Psalm 48, ‘Great is the Lord’, which features lengthy and satisfying melodies, word setting that is both vivid and sensitive, and frequent changes in tempo and mood. Gerald Finzi’s ‘God is gone up’ , written in 1951 for a St Cecilia’s Day service at St Sepulchre, Holborn, is a well-written anthem of praise which stretches the resources of the organ to its limits.

Our Soloists are Helen Bailey, Cathy Parkin, David de Winter and Colin Campbell, and the organist is Scott Farrell (Rochester Cathedral). As a special treat, Scott will play Sir William Walton’s ‘Crown Imperial’.
