Handel ‘Messiah’

Concert details

Join us for a very special concert  – a complete, uncut performance of Handel’s masterwork.

A performance of Handel’s Messiah in its entirety is a rare gem, and Thanet Festival Choir will offer every glorious moment of it, complete with professional soloists and chamber orchestra, as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations.  Beloved of singer and audience alike, the work includes movements of great beauty and lyricism, some of which are now rarely heard in concert. Among them are sparkling arias, a contemplative duet and several typically rousing choruses which more than hold their own against the perennial favourite, Hallelujah.

Handel’s sacred oratorios seem to strike the perfect balance between virtuosic and pious, and Messiah, a veritable outpouring of faith by a deeply spiritual man, is rightly considered his finest.  The reverent sweetness of I Know That My Redeemer Liveth contrasts with the harrowing mockery of He Trusted In God That He Would Deliver Him, and that with the stately assurances of the bass aria, The Trumpet Shall Sound – just a selection of the King James Bible scriptures set to music in Handel’s masterpiece.

Our soloists for this concert are Sofia Larsson, Edward McMullan, Mark Dobell and Michael R. Bundy,

As this is an uncut performance, the concert will start at the earlier-than-usual time of 6.00pm.
