Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ and Haydn ‘Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo’

Concert details

Our friends from the Chorale Guillaume Dufay de Chimay (Belgium) will join us for this concert, and we will be accompanied by the Festival Orchestra.

Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’, composed in 1715, is his most famous choral work, a joyous setting of the words of the ‘gloria’ from the traditional Latin Mass. It is full of distinctive melodies and rhythms and has an immediate appeal: it will leave you feeling joyful and uplifted. By contrast, the ‘Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo’ (also known as the Kleine Orgelmesse) was composed much later in the eighteenth century. It is shorter and lighter than many of Haydn’s other settings of the Mass and more contemplative in nature than the Vivaldi but is nevertheless a gem of a work, much-loved by those who know it.

Our programme also includes two String Concerti by Vivaldi and motets by Vivaldi, Michael Haydn and Joseph Haydn.

Join us for a wonderful programme of contrasting eighteenth century music. Tickets are now on sale, £12 in advance and £14 at the door. Tickets purchased online will be posted to you. Please note that there is a £1 administration charge to cover PayPal and postage costs.
