Gilbert and Sullivan ‘Trial by Jury’ and Rutter ‘The Sprig of Thyme’

Concert details

For our Summer Concert we will be revisiting Trial by Jury’, which we last performed more than 10 years ago.  In this light-hearted summer programme Gilbert and Sullivan’s one act comic opera  is teamed with John Rutter’s The Sprig of Thyme, a suite of folk songs which is entirely new to the Choir. Our soloists for this concert will include some Music College students, so this is an opportunity to see and hear some stars of the future!

The Sprig of Thyme

Folk songs have been passed down from generation to generation, telling timeless stories of ordinary lives. In The Sprig of Thyme, Rutter has put together eleven traditional songs from Great Britain and Ireland which make up a colourful musical patchwork of human experience. Through simple, direct language and lilting melodies, the songs tell us about the complexities of human life – especially where love is concerned!

Trial by Jury

Trial by Jury, Gilbert and Sullivan’s first major collaboration, has been described as ‘probably the most successful British one-act operetta of all time’. It is a witty, tuneful and very ‘English’ piece about an action for Breach of Promise,  a considerable contrast to the bawdy burlesques and adaptations of French operetta which dominated the London stage at the time. Unlike most Gilbert and Sullivan operas there is no spoken dialogue in Trial by Jury, but each song carries the plot forward and adds depth to the characters. The wonderful singalong tunes and witty dialogue for which the duo later became famous are there for all to hear and enjoy – especially the famous Judge’s Song ‘When I, Good Friends, was called to the Bar’.
